All about Christa.
I am a fully qualified physiotherapist registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and a member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. I have a special interest in treating people with chronic pain or chronic conditions. I equally enjoy helping people to return to their sporting activities following injuries, or help people return to work or stay at work due to spinal or other injuries.
I started my training as a physiotherapist in The Netherlands in 1996. One of our subjects was Myofascial Release (Bindweefsel massage). A lot has changed in the world of myofascia since then thanks to ongoing research and growing interest.
After graduating I briefly worked in the Netherlands before I moved to Botswana for 2 years where I worked both in a hospital setting and later on in a private physiotherapy practice. I moved to England in 2004 and have been working in various private physiotherapy practices since 2006.
I did an initial myofascial release course in England in 2008 with John Annan, English physiotherapist who was trained by John Barnes and others. I was fascinated by his journey to discovering myofascial release.
My own personal journey started later when my old knee injury and subsequent surgeries and their scars (including an incision through the quad muscle) were starting to cause me more and more often back problems. I needed regular physiotherapy treatment and did lot of stretches and exercises which helped but always knew the next problem was only just around the corner. (Opening the curtains could injure my back again!). One day when demonstrating a Quad/ hip flexor stretch I pulled my Quad muscle and was limping about for a few days. During the recovery time I discovered that releasing my quad muscle (the one with a big scar!) released my longstanding back pain / tension! That’s when I knew I had to look further and ended up having myofascial release treatment with Amanda Oswald. After 4 treatments and lots of self-care and home exercises I no longer had that ongoing tension in my back. I do need to keep doing exercises and look after myself. But I am now able to continue to work and enjoy life without having to worry when the next back injury happens.
I completed a course taught by Amanda Oswald in ‘Practical Myofascial Release’ and gained a Diploma recognised and accredited by the FHT (Federation of Holistic Therapies).
